Description
Apurinic/apyrimidinic sites are pre-mutagenic lesions that occur frequently in DNA molecules by spontaneous hydrolysis, by DNA damaging agents or by DNA glycosylases that remove specific abnormal bases. Ape-1 is a major AP endonuclease that cleaves the phosphodiester backbone 5' to the AP site. It has been characterized as a coactivator for estrogen receptor-alpaha (ERalpha) a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors.
