Description
17β-estradiol is the most potent of the mammalian estrogenic steroids, and is a natural agonist for ERα and ERβ. In humans, it is produced primarily by the cyclic ovary and the placenta, but is also produced by the adipose tissue of men and postmenopausal women. Synthetic forms are used in the treatment of a variety of symptoms associated with the menopause, including vasomotor symptoms, vulvar and vaginal atrophy, and osteoporosis. Drugs that retain the desirable properties of 17β;-estradiol but lack undesirable effects are referred to as selective ER modulators (SERMs).
