Description
1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 is the active hormonal form of vitamin D and the primary natural ligand of the vitamin D receptor (VDR), a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. Its biological functions include  calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, bone remodeling, cellular proliferation and differentiation. Synthetic vitamin D analogs such as calcitriol have a variety of therapeutic properties, including treatment of cancer, secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic renal disease and hypocalcemia.
