Description
ERR-γ is a member of the ERR orphan subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. While it is structurally homologous to estrogen receptors and binds estrogen response elements, it is not activated by estrogens. While it is expressed in most major physiological systems at low to moderate levels (endocrine, metabolic, gastrointestinal, immune, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory and structural), ERR-γ is predominantly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS), notably in the brain stem, cerebellum, corpus striatum, olfactory bulb, spinal cord, hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Targeted deletion (knockout) of ERR-γ results in lactatemia, electrocardiographic abnormalities, and death during the first week of life.
