Description
The CAR orphan subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors consists of CAR (in the human) and CAR-β (only in the mouse). CARs play roles in regulating expression of CYP genes in response to exogenous xenobiotics and endogenous lipid compounds. CAR is almost exclusively expressed in the gastrointestinal system (stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, colon, gall bladder) and liver, with lower levels in the seminal vesicle and eye.
