Description
ERR-β is a member of the ERR orphan subfamily of the nuclear receptor superfamily of transcription factors. While it is structurally homologous to estrogen receptors and binds estrogen response elements, it is not activated by estrogens. It has a role in early placental development. ERRβ is expressed at low to moderate levels in tissues in all major physiological systems (central nervous system (CNS), endocrine, metabolic, gastrointestinal, immune, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory and structural) with peaks in the eye, kidney, thyroid gland, testis and heart. ERRβ dysfunction has been associated with deafness. Targeted deletion (knockout) of ERRβ results in placental defects and prenatal lethality. Deletion of ERRβ in specific cell types in the inner ear results in defective production of endolymph.
